USDA Food Database

This is an edited version of the USDA database that includes 7,906 food items, the Cal-Index, and other key nutritional metrics.

The entire database as an excel spreadsheet, and as a .csv file may be found in the Download tab. The .csv file can be loaded into a data miner - we use DataDesk6. The column legend details may be found in the USDA Reference Document - "Composition of Foods Raw, Processed, Prepared USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 24"

NDB = Unique ID for the food item
Short Description = Food description based on standards published in App A in USDA Reference Document
Cal-Index = number of calories per gram of food
Water = number of Water per 100 grams of food
Prot = number of grams Protein per 100 grams of food
Carbs = number of grams Carbohydrates per 100 grams of food, includes total Sugar and Dietary Fiber.
Fat = total number of grams total Lipids per 100 grams food - Includes Saturated Fatty Acids, Mono and Poly Fatty Acids and Cholesterol
Sat F = number of grams of Saturated Fatty Acids per 100 grams of food
Mon F = number of grams of Monounsaturated fatty acids per 100 grams of food
Pol F = number of grams of Polyunsaturated fatty acids per 100 grams of food
Chol = number of grams of Cholesterol per 100 grams of food
Fiber = number of grams dietary fiber per 100 grams of food (note this is usually not included in count of total calories)
Sugar = number grams of sugars per 100 grams of food (the sum of the individual monosaccharides, galactose, glucose, and fructose and disaccharides, sucrose, lactose, and maltose)
Na = number of mg of Sodium per 100 grams of food
Ca = number of mg of Calcium per 100 grams of food

You can search database by entering search terms in the box that says "Search Filter" on the left.

Database is sorted using Cal-Index lowest to highest. You can re-sort any column by clicking on small arrows in header.
